I've been aware of Baldur's Gate 3 since it was announced as Larian's next big game, but I wasn't that interested in it. I'd never played the first two games, since I hate real-time-with-pause combat, so a new one was... whatever. I have no special attachment to D&D either, I figured maybe I'd check it out a while after it came out. It went firmly on the back burner of my mind, I would pretty much ignore any news coming out.
But then I started seeing people on twitter like... pre-emptively worrying about BG3 ruining people's expectations for RPGs going forward? I forget who it was now, but it was literally like "hey this is a special case, RPGs like this can't happen going forward". And I've seen more stuff like this lately, people acting like this game will be so high quality that it's going to be a social problem.
That is what got me to go look more closely at the game, and decide to buy it. If a game is looking so good that people are wringing their hands that it will be too good and make other games look bad? Well, there's gotta be something interesting going on there.
