I mean this in the most complimentary way possible, but it feels like a self-indulgent indie project from like 2010 that actually got fully finished. Lots of dumb jokes and internet references. But, like the best JRPGs, it knows how to take things more seriously when it's warranted.
Honestly, playing the remake of Live A Live last year really reminded me of how like... RPGs used to be an inherently comedic genre. Like, there were always just lots of slapstick gags all over the place. They grew out of tabletop games, not serious literature, so it makes a lot of sense. This follows more in that tradition than, say, Disco Elysium or whatever.
But also, it just has lots of really nice pixel art! And a fun battle system, though not like... heavily systems-based, shall we say. Well, I'm only a couple hours in, there could be more complexity later, but I don't think it's really needed.
The structure kinda reminds me of Final Fantasy IX, with you switching between different perspectives pretty often. It's neat, you don't see that trick very often these days.
