Heya! I'm Behemoth, and I'm a big ol' nerd. Professionally, I recently became a web developer, but I used to work at the Pike Place Market. FFXIV, JoJo, One Piece, Gundam, etc.

Well, despite the fact that he never returned to Japan after his initial visit, you can not only meet but also befriend Admiral Matthew Perry in Rise of the Ronin, after fighting him as a boss in the prologue.

In fact, this is how you unlock the power of American Martial Arts for the saber! Sadly, the names of the special moves are not as fun as British Style, it turns out.

By befriending Perry, I learned, before the main plot tells me this, that my twin not only didn't die, but was taken back to America after the prologue. That is wild. Team Ninja please make a DLC where you control the twin running around doing ninja shit in like 19th century Washington DC.

Anyway, all that aside, this does tell me that the developers are not going to let the historical record get in the way of the story they're trying to write. This section of the game is set in 1858, the year that Perry died back in America. He was riddled with gout and arthritis, and had become an instructor for the navy. But in this game, he is not only back in Japan for some reason, but is someone you can bring along to help fight hand to hand on missions!

It's so silly. I am going to befriend Admiral Perry and master American Style swordsmanship. Why the heck not.
