i want to like the framework laptop, but even with everything being repairable, i'm not confident the quality of those parts is better than a thinkpad T line laptop. i think the framework is an ethical choice, but the thinkpad is a lower cost of ownership over 4-5 years for the same specs.
^^ this is likely completely irrelevant, but it is the laptop opinion i hold the strongest. have at you!

i don’t like the port module gimmick framework has. they’re so bulky that if they just had normal ports on the motherboard there would be plenty of room for every type they offer as an extra
it doesn’t even work as future proofing. future standards would require a new motherboard anyway, so why not just have a replaceable single i/o panel like on desktop
I don't think the Framework is actually built well at all - I rec'd one to a friend last year, it's broken down multiple times, and now won't charge anymore. Nice(er) idea, horrid execution.
Laptops bigger than 14" are just desktops with a battery. The ideal laptop form-factor is a 6" subnotebook with a finger-and-stylus touchscreen and a full-size Ethernet port.
just as a warning to others but not like, knocking @multioculate: know what you're getting into tho. Teeny laptops are cool and portable, but their use is, different.
my one mix 3 (similar tiny laptop) is great, but the ergonomics are terrible if you plan to be sitting a lot with it.
Mine is amazing for plonking down and doing a thing for 5-10 minutes, or walking around with it in one arm and typing with the other.
but Shrimp Mode with this thing? you really gotta have something else. Even at like, coffee shops.
they can DO longer term stuff, but your neck (and wrists, depending) might not, so it's a thing to be prepared for
Yeah, cosigned. In the interest of full disclosure, I have a 4U bucket o'compute with about a square meter of desk dedicated to a full ansi-104 key board, a fancy trackball, and literally 20 times as much screen as on a 6" laptop. I use that for desk work, and the A1 is my field machine. I do use it in coffee shops but I also have corrected 15/20 vision and a command-line-centric workflow, so YMMV.
yeah, yep on all points. Just trying to keep people from ending up like my ex who tried to daily drive one >_>

the hp elitebook 8470p is a lovely little laptop and absolutely the best laptop i've used. i would kill for one with modern specs
gaming laptops are worse at everything including gaming compared to regular laptops
just use integrated graphics
