A combination of factors making Cohost a lot nicer to be on than Twitter:

  • Posts take up a fairly large amount of screen real estate
  • Knowing this, users tend to be fairly circumspect with what & how much they repost
  • There is no algorithmic feed serving you content from people you don't follow just because it got a lot of engagement
  • Blocking is very easy and works very well
  • There's no culture of posting screenshots of accounts you don't like to dunk on them (and even if you did that'd probably be considered targeted harassment and get deleted anyway)

All of these things taken together mean that it's honestly PRETTY easy to have a pleasant, discourse-free (or, at least, discourse-light) timeline as long as you unfollow or block those users who, for some reason, make starting & perpetuating tiresome arguments their entire personality.

Or, to put it another way, I need you to understand that when you vaguepost about a disagreeable experience you had with another user as though it's indicative of a simmering sitewide cauldron of bad vibes, 1) are you sure about that last part because 2) probably it isn't, and 3) regardless, there is basically no way for me to find out what the hell you're talking about unless I ask, and fuck asking. If I wanna be exposed to posts from annoying losers I'll just hop into "#cohost meta" or "#discourse".*

*not all posts in these tags are by annoying losers but if posts by annoying losers are what you absolutely crave you'll get the best value-for-money in those feeds
