@Librarianon asked:

What genres, if any, do you think are impossible for the porn game genre?

Okay, so obviously I'm on record with pretty strong opinions on what genre is BEST for porn games. Fundamentally, I do think that "ludic mechanical complexity" and "sexual pleasure as derived from pornography" are mutually exclusive. Oil and water.

That said! I don't necessarily mind seeing attempts to prove this wrong, doomed though they might be. It's a very difficult design problem, and even unsuccessful attempts at solving difficult problems can be interesting and educational.

Which is why I'd really hesitate to call any genre truly "impossible" to be pornified. For one thing, you can just, like, PUT porn in anything. It's trivial to make a bog-standard first-person shooter and then put little pornographic VN segments or animations in between levels. Boom, done. The actual CHALLENGING thing, the thing that would genuinely IMPRESS me (and that I genuinely have yet to see in any genre outside of visual novels) is a game that functions well within its chosen genre AND maintains a throughline of being sexually exciting.

So, like, a pornographic spaceflight sim? A pornographic 4X empire-builder? A pornographic meditative chore simulator? All of those represent pretty significant challenges, but I can't necessarily say I wouldn't enjoy seeing someone take a swing at solving them in a satisfying fashion!

I think those working with specific fetishes have a huge advantage in this department. Many lend themselves to certain genres well, or some creativity can lead to using the fetish as a central gameplay theme.

I point to the Didnapper games, mainly the sequel, as a good way to spice up a JRPG battle system via bondage. Characters don't die, but instead when at a certain low health, can be tied up. They can still use actions while bound, usually some sort off debuff (or even a self-healing masochism skill), but what this really adds to the formula is a unique back and forth as you have to judge if you have a non-bound character using their turn to help free a tied party member, or stay focused on the fight. They're planning a huge re-balance in March when the last story update is out, so a lot of thought was placed into that system.

Adventure High and Caliross also benefit a ton from their mid control focuses, one from a dom perspective and the other from a sub perspective. There's still a central RPG story going on, but who you control and how, or end up being under the influence of, changes story details or creates new branches, and can even affect gameplay (like being beaten by Cassandra in AH leads to her as a permanent party member who will actually attack you in battle if you do not heal her when she demands).

When we're dealing mostly with straight up sex, though, things tend to get...uh, messy. I have encountered a lot of bummers in this department when they aren't narrative focused. This also pops up in fetish game scenes, TFGames in particular flooded with bloated HTML made life sims that go on for ages and require absurd amounts of micromanaging, even with shortcuts added (NO I DO NOT WANT TO HAVE TO PUT ON AN OUTFIT IN A DIFFERENT MENU EVERY SINGLE DAY).

Just wanted to second the point about fetishes since making a game with a specific kink angle helps reign in scope and lets the devs play around the strengths of that kink instead of trying to broadly appeal to a bunch.

Corruption of Champions and Trials in Tainted Space are pretty solid RPGs on top of the corruption and lust mechanic, and have had enough staying power to have spawned a mini genre of similar games.

There's also been a few transformation kink focused visual novels recently (Mice Tea, Bombshell Barista, and the upcoming Changling Tale) that deliver great and hot stories if you're into that specific kink, but I'll admit they lack a little on the 'gameplay' side since they're pure VNs.
