your silence on the matter of the pokemon parody game that looks like pokemon is deafening, yuuko from nichijou. state your stance at once

just kidding. how's FFXIV?

my palworld stance is i think its success is depressing and true. the people simply want slop. i think there's a lot of words being spilled to talk about its quality, the decisions it made that contributed to its succes, to kind of impose a meritocratic order onto the chaos of culture, which obviously doesn't exist. it did not blow up because it was actually super thoughtful about how it integrated all of these popular things, it blew up because it was crafting + pokemon + guns. it doesn't have a backlash because of a principled stance against plaigarism or whatever, it has a backlash because its cynicism has been richly rewarded. your favourite artists labour unnoticed, the pokemon slavery guys are overnight millionaires. it is maybe the simplest and most obvious gaming discourse we've had in a hot minute, the waters only muddied after the fact by people on all sides trying too hard. attempting to find some deeper truth or moral there is just going to drive you crazy you gotta make your peace with it somehow.

my ffxiv stance is i'm only done with ARR but i am enjoying the MMO well enough but the story is truly a disaster. which is very funny considering i hear the game talked about in the opposite terms. i wrote a review on backloggd that you can check out if you want. i'll keep everyone updated as i go through the expansions over the course of the year. the game is fucking long bro it'll take a while. but my quest to beat every final fantasy game continues

I think the most interesting thing about 14's writing is how it slowly tries to pull itself out of the incredibly deep hole it digs with its earlier material, whether the end result is good is for people with less investment than I to judge, but it's certainly fascinating to see the attempts to fix some of the ABSURDLY FUCKED AND BAD SHIT from the early years, as well as the new unforced errors they make along the way lmao

Tbf for FFXIV when people say the story is good they usually talk about how in Heavensward becomes entretaining and Shadowbringers just being good because unless you are beyond hope and too FFXIV pilled everyone notices how much ARR absolutely sucks ass. We absolutely do not talk about Stormblood so Im curious to see your thoughts on that mess in particular once you get there.

oh no yeah, as someone currently on Shadowbringers, yeah ARR's story and writing is a hurdle, lmao

it really is one of the best MMOs out there mechanically, and the writing does get much better and more engaging as the expansions go on, but, yeah, ARR is still a whole lotta baggage that the devs keep trimming away at

ARR is pretty bad, and it has some severe tonal issues. The way it talks about the "beast tribes" is truly gross. There are some sidequests that really just make me feel like a villain, and it's extremely not intended.
It's a low bar, but to the writers' credit, they don't try to justify this kinda stuff later on. The writing becomes not just more engaging, but also more compassionate.

I didn't realize you were a fellow traveler on the road to beat all the FF games, good stuff. I'm currently around halfway through 12. I got into FF14 a few years ago but I'm gonna play ARR as my "playthrough" (did something similar with FF11, beat Shadowlord and peaced) and I'm curious how ARR has changed in the last couple years, and also how it will hold up as someone who's been through it before. I suspect a lot of the leeway I gave it initially was due to having a bunch of fun systems to play with so I didn't really pay super close attention to the story.
