Original Description:

Way back when the song “Matryoshka” by HachiP first came out in 2010, I saw crossover art for it everywhere. I always wanted to draw some of my original characters in the style, but I never did. I can’t remember why.

Fast forward to last week, Jubi Phonic on YouTube posted a new English cover of it, and it made me really nostalgic. So now I finally drew the crossover I wanted to 6-7 years ago. :)

Man, drawing this was a wild ride. Usually when I say that about art I mean it was a technical or anatomical nightmare, which this one absolutely was, yet it didn’t bother me at all. I had a fun time with this one! I got lots of practice with the symmetry tool and some new techniques. I’m slowly getting better at drawing faces in profile too.

I’m really surprised how well the buildings came out? Like… I hate drawing buildings. I know these are just stylized boxes that vaguely look like buildings and don’t follow perspective at all, but still. Also technically I drew what I fondly call “The Urban Hell Circle” twice, because I goofed it up the first time and I knew I could do so much better. So I spent an extra day redoing it.
Still, I’m surprised how relatively quickly it went. I’m a very slow artist, and that’s usually multiplied by me trying new things, but the Urban Hell Circle went very quickly and smoothly the second time, and only a little bit worse the first time. I really love the look of densely packed details like that, but I so rarely have the patience for it.
