A little more than a year ago, I was first considering getting into 3D modeling mostly so that I could model Rayner’s freaking legs so that I could draw them at interesting angles. A year of learning to model later and I’ve finally done it… I modeled his arms too just to make sure the elbow joints worked in a 3D space, and they do, but it wasn’t interesting enough to include.
I say this a lot, but if you’re an artist like me who struggles to imagine and design things in a 3D space when drawing, then learn how to 3D model. It’s helped me so friggin much. Also, I can guilt-free trace my own models because I modeled the dang things anyways. Spend time modeling stuff so you can save time later!
Also, I’m going to say it first since I know half you heathens are thinking it: Thicc. His upper thighs came out wider than I intended, but that’s easy enough to fix down the road. :v
More design ramblings and lore below the read-more
Rayner’s hair gets fluffier and fluffier every time I change his design. I cannot resist the fluff. Also, it seems my OCs always end up with bangs colored differently from the rest of their hair…
The biggest change is getting rid of all his dumb ball joints since they worked horribly from a flexibility standpoint. Having interior skeletal joints with padding and artificial skin around them would be more comfortable for him moving around and more comfortable for me to draw, lmao. His palms are more flexible too, only the brace running down the pinky side of his hand is solid. His chest might look solid, but it’s got a little bit of give to it.
Rayner becoming more flexible over time kinda makes sense from a lore perspective though. He was originally designed only to fight, but after being found and repaired by Linnet and Kobi and living a more normal life among people who see him as a friend or family, he started to value comfort and aesthetics instead of pure efficiency.
Last notable change is the front part of his ear antenna things are LED screens now, because you can never have too much glowy stuff!
