Original Description:

My 2D and 3D art are slowly becoming more and more indistinguishable from one another and I’m very excited about that. :] Part of that’s likely because I did the texturing entirely on the flat UVs because I no longer fear God.

I’ve been meaning to design Rayner’s armor for ages, but since I suck at drawing and designing hard surface objects, I waited around until I could model it first.

Detailed descriptions and lore stuff under the read-more

He’s already incredibly tanky on his own, so all his armor really is is a helmet, chest plate, blast collar, and layered, semi-flexible armor plating around his midsection and outer hips. In my original concept art he had some badass looking shoulder guards too, but they just didn’t work in a 3D space without crippling his arms’ range of motion. :’)

Besides, tanks without some weak points are boring, and it’s not like being able to take off one or both of his arms is an easy feat either. His bones are made of friggin solid metal after all. A far better strategy is to survive and keep him preoccupied long enough for him to overheat, because both the vents on his sides and mouth are covered, reducing his cooling efficiency by a good bit. And he’s way too stubborn and determined to give up easily.

His head and neck are the most heavily protected, since the only way he can really “die” is irreparable brain damage. Even then, he could still be repaired, he just wouldn’t be himself anymore. He does get yearly backups though, (yearly because they take like 72 hours to make), but that’s an existential crisis he’d really rather not have to face.

Also a cool thing that I have no idea how to smoothly segue into; He doesn’t use his eyes or mouth at all with his helmet on. Instead, he just hooks up directly to its sensors and speakers. His “sight” is primarily radar-based, so he can see in 360°, in the dark, and through dust and smoke that would obscure normal sight, but he can still see light and color through cameras in the front. Mostly just light values though, the color fidelity kinda sucks. The helmet’s hearing’s a little bit better than his normal hearing as well.

As a silly side note; since he speaks using what’s essentially a Vocaloid-style voice bank and speakers instead of with a diaphragm, vocal chord, and mouth system like normal, he can make his voice sound like anything. He also found out that humans and other sapient organics tend to find text-to-speech voices and their unusual pronunciations hilarious. I’m sure you can put two and two together. :^)
