Proper Renders

Shenanigans Time: Facial Features Gone Wrong Edition!

The first gif was me first experimenting with the whole “anime eyebrows always show through the hair” thing in viewport. It works really well with backface culling! …as long as there’s nothing else in your scene, because they don’t just show through the hair, they show through everything.

Second image was when I was making smile shape keys, I used the wrong pivot and made a :> face by accident. It looked cute in flat shading, but then I switched to rendered and… yeah… Please don’t.

Last image was me just goofing around because I can’t be trusted with shape keys. Like… y’know, nyah~ :3

Happy 2 year and 1 month anniversary to my hobby 3D modeling career! The timing wasn’t planned, but it’s fitting that the first model I made was a sculpt of Linnet, and now here she is again with her twin brother and many, many improvements. (Technically, I’ve modeled Kobi once before too, but he got banished to WIP hell.)

This is my first project that solely used Blender’s new render engine EEVEE. I have a… complicated relationship with EEVEE. It’s cool having a real time renderer and more nodes and all, but I miss Blender Internal for stylized cell shaders. They exaggerate EEVEE’s biggest flaw in my opinion: cast shadows and contact shadows. You can probably see it easiest on Kobi’s stray tufts of hair, where instead of properly tracing where the shadow would land, it just… fills in everything in between in screenspace.

Long live Blender Internal. Your code may have been nearly as old as I am and made of spaghetti, but you worked damn well for cartoons.

Clothing Prompt by @jurinova on Tumblr

I have much more important projects to be working on right now, but I go ahead and draw this silliness anyways.
I really need to just draw in quicker, sloppier lines like this, because at a distance they’re basically indistinguishable from my high-effort line art and take under half the time. But perfectionism’s a B… :/c

Both Linnet and Kobi really like fancy but practical / flexible clothes, so Linnet’s frowning loudly because a corset is about as far as you can get from that. She’s not a fan of cleavage windows either. She basically wants to delete and redo anything between the collar and waist, because the dress part and colors are awesome. Both of them look good in magenta, and the whole greyscale with an accent color palette fits them perfectly, so when I saw these two outfits in the clothing meme, I was just, “It’s too perfect. I must draw them in these.”

Lastly, my confusion at my abrupt and unexpected improvement when it comes to shading continues. I guess playing around with 3D modeling stuff activated a sleeper agent in my brain that’s actually good at art and understands how shapes work. 😅

One does not simply live for hundreds of years with an intact moral compass.

I saw this post a while back and thought, “Holy shit, that’s Linnet.” This comic is definitely on the exaggerated side, but yeah, she has a genetically modified fusion of a Maine coon cat and a raccoon named Lavender that she grew in a lab. She’s got a cleft palate and some other health issues, but she’s otherwise a happy cooncoon that Linnet takes very good care of, so moral ambiguity ho! Also since Linnet’s friggin tiny and Maine coon cats and raccoons can be massive fluffballs, Lavender’s like… half the size of Linnet, ahaha.

The thing that really made that post remind me of Linnet though is that she has a very low tolerance of any perceived unfairness against her, even if from an outside perspective the two things really aren’t comparable. She’s also very protective of Lavender, and she threatens to personally kick anyone who calls Lavender ugly out of an airlock.

I still don’t know how to place speech bubbles… :\c
