Here’s a 3D remake of my old icon from February last year! Yeah, I really don’t update my icons often…

I made this as a guinea pig for an even bigger character portrait that I’ve been working on for like a month already. I wanted to make sure I could get a normal map workflow to work, and after a lot of cursing, it did! …aaand then I ended up just going with shadeless anyways because I liked how it looked better for this model. I would have textured things a bit differently had I known, but it still works.

I haven’t tried lineless art in years. It was surprisingly painless, although I did fall into the trap of “I could tweak this drawing endlessly,” since there’s no point of no return with my usual line art.

The thing that still really fascinates me about pixel art with dithering is that this entire drawing only has 16 colors. I could easily knock it down to 14 too, although I didn’t want to sacrifice the yellowy white in the background and the darkest shade of brown in the pupils. I was hyperfixated on optical illusions as a little kid, so using dithering and color illusions to make a color palette as small as possible makes me happy.

Also Dan Fessler’s HD Index Painting is still the coolest friggin thing to happen in my artist life.
