I don’t think my neck could have handled a physical ink Inktober (my desk set up is much better for my tablet vs my sketchbook), so I settled for trying to push some comfort zones with lighting and coloring digitally instead. I expected it to be a bit of a shitshow since I haven’t done 2D art since the end of July, but it… came out really cool in my opinion?? I had a fun time with this one. :D

Copper’s canon abilities are loosely based off the whole ‘gorgon’s gaze can turn you to stone’ thing, so for my species shuffle AU I made that more literal and turned them into a void gorgon, haha. I STILL need to write out descriptions and strengths & weaknesses of their canon anomalies someday..

They DO have a face, but they can do weird chameleon stuff where, instead of just the color of their skin changing, they can pull some eldritch BS and become a visually incomprehensible void. I can get away with that because species shuffle is more fantasy and paranormal-angled while canon is sci-fi and quasi-science-angled. :p

Making human sprites of all my nonhuman characters for Death Road to Canada made me want to draw some, but these two especially. Partly because I really liked how Elliott’s clothes and Sylvia’s hair looked, and partly because both of them are kinda obnoxious to draw in their respective canon species, aaaaa.

A random thing I realized while drawing this and thinking about the similarities between these two is that any character of mine 158cm / 5′1″ (Elliott’s height) or under is a cunning, conniving, petty little shit. Don’t let Sylvia’s sweet face and demeanor fool you. In fact, their inclination towards petty revenge grows the shorter they get, with the exception of Squid, who’s the pettiest of them all. They only use their powers of revenge for good though. (Mostly…)

Human Squid is just another alternate universe character of mine that I’m sorely tempted to make canon just because I like their design.

Although technically Squid here doesn’t have to be human, and the AU is just that their shape shifting is less restricted… Possibilities.
