The annotations can be centered above the words they're annotating by using more <ruby> tags, though it is is a little fiddly (also increasing the font-size here because the default is a little small for English).
Also, shoutout to the people who make the subtitles for Tom Scott videos for using ruby annotations to subtitle puns! It's such a neat use of the technology.

It's been really fun for us to do those ruby captions at appropriate times, because ruby text is honestly way too underutilized on YT even by the languages meant to use it. One limitation is that certain platforms like mobile render the furigana in-line with specified brackets instead:

I pronounce it GIF [/ɡɪf/]

It's nothing to use often in the west, but I certainly hope more channels that need furigana actually get to use it.

I never knew about <ruby> tags until I joined cohost and wanted to know all the different markup features we can exploit and saw these...
and I just KNEW that they could be useful for all sorts of things...
including both their intended and unintended purposes, ehehehhh
