not because the posts are weird!
the people that I followed on twitter for the past 5-7 years have near exclusively been in the business of posting really vapid tweets that are at least meme-adjacent and I just kind of accepted this as normal. I chose to surround myself with this because that was what I believed I wanted from a social network; funny tweetsmen making an insane amount of intentionally stupid posts because they'd make me laugh.
so you can imagine my shock when, after beginning to grow tired of my old resting grounds, that I (and a few of my friends who got in first) signed up for the site, and saw... people actually making substantial posts. there was the usual funny stuff, sure, but I was seeing entire essays being written about things that people were passionate about, no longer constrained by arbitrary limits of 140/280 characters forcing them to break them up into huge and unwieldy threads! it was (and still is) really daunting. twitter likes to hand you things on a silver platter even when you turn every setting related to it off and here, it's just nothing.
I'm still trying to get my bearings here, trying to disconnect myself from the "number should go up and if not then something is wrong" ideology that I ended up adopting after the near death of the bulletin board format. it's hard and I still don't know how to find new people to follow, but I can at least feel good about knowing that there are people genuinely using this site in creative ways.
