made this at around the start of the covid pandemic, on famitracker-0cc, and at the time i was like "WHOA i made a rly cool good song :D" but now it's like, meh, drums could be better (DPCM is entirely unused cause i had no idea how to really use that skjdfgkjf)
it's decent enough to share, anyway, so um yea :O
also uh last minute addition i added another lil track in there, something i made around the same time on a 30 minute timer as a speed challenge :3c it okay i think
i was originally planning to comment on how cool a spectrogram of the beginning of spook1 looked
but now i mainly want to say how COOL i think this sounds???
this sounds like it could be an ost for some spooky part in a game... except that it's WAY more expressive than i would normally expect for an ost even for games with really good osts???
it's almost like you hired a really expressive singer to sing some parts in a relatively simple song but to still pour their emotions into it and also their voice is just chiptune bloops.

even for quite a while after i sent that comment, i found that the song continued to exist as an earworm in my head... which is a pretty solid approval by the unconscious mechanics of my minddd
i'm kind of curious as to whether the melodies originated from your mind before you wrote this, or whether you're just good at coming up with melodies as you make music??
because if it's the former, with how it persisted in my mind, i can see how it'd have been concocted by your mind while like e.g., showering or whatever, too.
but if it's the latter (or something else), then that's pretty impressive!!
thinking back to when i made this, i was in a concert band class in high school (around 2020, near march i think1), so my brain was very much in a sorta Orchestral mindset while making this xP maybe i should keep doing that for stuff like this
and funny enough i believe the melodies were mostly made up on the spot! mainly just by playing around with notes until things sounded cool/good- though to be fair i did/do have a bit of a background in music (and certain music theory concepts) which help guided my ear for like Where the tension and release should be, the A and B sections, etc., and also like my subconscious must've recalled stuff too cause i remember at the time my friend said the first few notes reminded them of a song from undertale (the waterfall section) which was completely unintentional!!! brain was just like "ooh these notes are good, let's iterate off of these" xO
i think i might be a bit more experienced at music today compared to back then?? Especially when it comes to sequencing drums, but idk im slightly intimidated at what i have to beat here cause im surprised at how well spook1 holds up ;w; (ofc i shouldn't be scared anyway, music is an art, shouldn't compare against others, etc) honestly i kinda can't believe that i sorta made it up on the spot like i almost wanna think it was luck but also i could totally do it again???? guuuuhh
anyway yeah thanks for renewing my confidence LOL im aiming to make another thing as soon as i get free time and college isn't tiring me out XWX
it's possible i made it during spring break to show it off to my teacher but then ,,,yeah
never responded to this (shuffling through my mind to remember everything that i originally wanted to sayy), but this makes perfect sense!
an already existing environment that'd really get your mind in that really cool creative headspace + the right amount of pressure... if that spring break to show your teacher was a significant enough of a pressure??
your subjective experience while making the melody also makes sense!
i suppose that it'd be like having learned a language (even your native language), and you figuring on the fly what notes would sound best next would be like figuring on the fly what word next to say in a sentence??
like, the process of what the next note/word should be isn't random as you shuffle between notes/words, but it wasn't pre‑constructed, either.
and oh my gosh, i totally see what your friend meant with the undertale waterfall bit, aha!
just sang it over your melody.
similar kind of staccato‑y effect, and similar upward movement in pitch to move the tension, and all that??
singing over it also made it clear just how different yours is, too, though, even if some of the underlying musical language have similar roots.
subconsciously learning from the skills of others via that whole ”great artists steal“ thing and suchh
and yeahhh, you were the one who made this, so the internal aspects of what gave rose to this song's definitely still there + a few more years of experience!
probably can't perfectly reproduce the same conditions that allowed spook1 to come about, but you don't need to???
since there will be other conditions to lean onto as you continue to build yourself up with more and more experienceee
and even if luck had played a role tbh you can study off yourself (even if subconsciously) and possibly figure out how to produce certain effects you liked more consistently with enough experienceeee
it still came from your mind and all that, after all!!

sknfdgnkdf your rebug reminded me to play around with making another chiptune song and , O_O first time messing around with DPCM and i already got a drumline that maybe kicks ass??? would be really sick if i could get something finished by the 31st but we'll see we'll see (soft deadline is sET)

i've noticed that drums seem to be a big focus of yours as of late, which i'm guessing must mean that that must've been an area that you've especially grown in since spook1
