I'm a fan of the public domain. If every story can fall into one or more archatypes, and every new story is just a reinterpretation of an stories that have been told over and over again, then I'm all for using works in the public domain as a starting point or framework for a retelling. Like creating an origin story for Captain Hook using the Odyssey as the framework for the narrative but have it end with him and the crew getting stuck on Neverland instead of returning home. But I'm really a fan of people reinterpreting problematic works, like Lovecraft, and turning it into metaphors that undermine the creator's bigetory.
What does any of that have to do with a robot with a skull on their chest? I'm thinking of doing a weird batshit sci-fi interpretation of the work of L. Frank Baum. But everyone and everything are robots. I might sprinkle some Edgar Rice Burroughs logic into. Nothing dramatic or serious. Who knows
