TGB already laid off basically everyone right before Blaseball happened because of COVID, they were already in a dire situation. But frankly, Blaseball had no path to monetization. The only way TGB would have come out of this unscathed would be to use the VC to start a new project, not keep funding Blaseball. Blaseball had way too much overhead in terms of hosting costs and time spent developing it and brought in basically nothing. Where was Blaseball going to make money? They were never going to load it with microtransactions or make it pay to win, and as a text based game there's not much opportunity for cosmetics. The only thing they could have done is require a subscription fee to play it and that would have upset a lot of people, so it would have been a really risky move. It was a niche game that cost too much to run and had no way to bring anything in. Basically, there was no saving it, even if it was fun while it lasted.
