If you've never played D&D or another tabletop roleplaying game, here's the gist of the issue. One person is the Gamemaster (GM). They play all the monsters and non-player characters (NPCs) and the imaginary world as a whole. The other players at the table simply play one character. The player character (PC).
Sometimes, dice are rolled to determine things. Can I leap over this chasm? Can I knock down this locked door? In D&D, this happens most often in combat. I swing my sword to attack the ooze. Do I hit? And if so, how much damage do I do? Dice determine the answer to these questions.
