chemically enforced obedience continues to do things to my brain chemistry. something about how pathetic Niamh is here... mmf, I dunno. it's hitting deep. her need, her helplessness, the comfort of a stuffed toy. weugh. maybe it's the 3am brain melt, but I'm like, practically yearning for it.

Though not to say Kell is the nicest (see Blood Sugar, and also like sleeping with the enemy till you get a reputation for it is taking advantage, even if i would have said Kell would only do it if they're into it)(tho see the reaping of that behaviour in Niamh, the remnants produce some messed up girlies).
And yeah, Niamh is supposed to appear much more comfortable around Kell in Ch. 02 and 3, but she is also still totally at their mercy and that's a lot. it's an amount of vulnerability Kell can barely begin to soothe.
Kell both knows that the militia finding Niamh useful, letting her defect and fight for them, would vastly better her mood, but also knows it doesn't solve the base problem. But little steps.
And little lore thing, the militia's structure is also totally unbelievable to her; where she's used to feudal hierarchy flexible only through rampant intrigue ('be useful or be disposed of'), the militia (per Blood Sugar again) is confederal. Each lance forms a voluntary, democratic unit that sends their elected subcommander (sub- to represent they serve the unit) as a representative on a usually-consensus-governed council. The Tribunal being run by at least a majority of SCs.
I imagine Kells idea is to let Niamh feel useful again and then point out the volunteer part and let Niamh slowly adjust to the idea that unlike her place as Yeoman, no one in the militia is being forced to be there. And hopefully then in staying, Niamh can feel she made a choice to do that.
