when i was playing mario & luigi superstar saga as a kid i was convinced luigi would die because i was learning about foreshadowing in middle school and i felt luigi had death clues. he didn't want to go on the adventure and everyone was undermining him so obviously he was going to die proving himself, so everyone would feel bad for treating him so poorly. i think kid me also had this backwards logic like, "luigi wasn't in mario sunshine so they're phasing him out. this will be luigi's Sendoff. his last hurrah."

when you have the solo luigi bit on the koopa cruiser near the end where he disguises himself as peach i was convinced luigi was going to die in that scene. it was ironic he would die here, because he accidentally got taken aboard the koopa cruiser against his will in the beginning and his bad feeling about this adventure would prove itself right...

keep in mind i liked luigi and i was happy i was wrong. but when your english class is going over the book holes by louis sachar, you start expecting everything is being set up like that book is.

i think this era lended itself to kids thinking stuff like this. by this point the mario RPGs had started doing narrative stuff that was already unexpected for mario at the time so i feel like, to a kid, Brand Writing wasn't as clear...this was the period where "flurrie is the ghost of bowser's dead wife" seemed semi plausible to a lot of my friends

god i love flurrie being bowser's dead wife like they would cash in on that in a future game. they keep putting hints at flurrie's return like she's sylux and when they finally reveal paper mario 3 there's a big flurrie moment in the trailer

Cackling at the phrase "Luigi had death clues". I'm just picturing a world where after two decades of Luigi in the games, he just suddenly dies one day and never appears in another game again, with Nintendo only speaking about him in hushed tones and refusing to comment in interviews. It's incredible

i keep thinking about this. You get far enough in the game for the big event, and from then on if you go back to the title screen it just says "Mario Superstar Saga" with a big open space where Luigi and his name would be
