So I finished Star Trek TOS the other day, now my wife and I have watched TOS, TNG, DS9, Voyger, Enterprise, SNW, Lower Dekcs and like half of Discovery and

wow season 3 of Star Trek TOS might be the worst season of star trek ever made?
It's not without it's strong points, The Medusan episode was cool, Day of the dove has some amazing visuals with the western town facade and the blood red sky. "The world is hollow and I have touched the sky" is just... one of the coolest sentences ever written (Even if that episode wasn't amazing)

But... BOY that season was bad. And like, weirdly sexist in ways the first two seasons weren't? Kirk all but tells Spock "Bitches be crazy" in one episode. The Medusan episode is weirdly concerned with how hot the blind scientist is and the abject disgust at an alien being so ugly is weird, all... of turnabout intruder.
Half the episodes end with the problem of the week just... killing itself and Kirk sitting on the bridge like "Well, that's that problem solved" (All our yesterdays, Way to Eden, let that be your last battlefield etc)
Kirk and Spock team up with Abraham Lincoln and Surak to fight evil historical figures for steaming poop monsters? Spocks Brain is a thing. Those fucking space hippies that end up dying cause they eat poisoned fruit after being told "Hey don't eat poison fruit"

Like, fuck that was rough. Like I know trek got canned after season 2 and then came back through fan petitions and shit but it genuinely feels like it would have been better if it didn't.

Anyway now onto the TOS movies.

I'm like two thirds through season 2 so far and so far we've had

  • Charlie X
  • The Corbomite Maneuver
  • Shore Leave
  • The Squire of Gothos
  • Arena
  • Errand of Mercy
-The City on the Edge of Forever
  • Who Mournes for Adonias
  • Catspaw
  • The Gamsters of Triskellion

This isn't even counting the episodes that just have the implication of some kind of impossible super beings like the forcefield around the galaxy in Where no man has gone before, or whatever made and left the Doomsday machine or what the cell from Immunnity Syndrome was part of.

So basically...

How the fuck was Piccard remotely surprised when he met Q? The galaxy is lousy with god like beings? Hell they meet another few over the course of TNG like Kevin Uxbridge and shit.

Wife and I watched Amok Time in our TOS watch last night and man I had forgtten this was the first episode of season 2.
Oh to be a horny shipping housewife in 1967 who'd spent the break writing Spock/Kirk ship fics for your gay star trek zine only to turn excitedly into season 2's premiere and watch Spock and Kirk cut off eachothers clothes, roll around on the ground together and choke one another.

Like, holy shit that must have been a fucking awakening for a lot of fetishes.
