So finally Zelda gets to be the lead in the Zelda series (do the CDi games count at all xD). I was stoked to see what the creatives could do with that. A new art style, setting, mechanics, you name it... But instead they reused the engine and assets from the Link's Awakening remake?
She should have gotten a from-the-ground-up art style for fuck's sake. Something new and fresh.
I am happy the gameplay isn't "Zelda with a sword", sure, but this? I am still somewhat on the fence on that one, but seems like a very, very watered down BOTW/TOTK approach.

I'm not hating on the game, it looks... OK, but I just think our princess deserves more. A bigger budget at least.
Then again, our other Princes didn't get much more than a mini game collection either...

I still think Princess Zelda is one of the most boring female characters in the entire series. From my point of view, she's getting what she deserves (which still looks like a fun game.) Though, on the other hand, it would be nice if Nintendo would stop sticking their female characters in little side games.

Don't find her boring at all. Lots of variety with all the different games, but that for another chapter.

We obviously already agree on the latter. At least Peach got a full fledged game on the DS(?). Haven't played it though.

Interestingly Nintendo took Bayonetta into the warmth of their mansion paying for two full games and a spin-off. Maybe they didn't have money for the older princesses ....

Super Princess Peach was extremely dumbed down and, as a woman who has played games all her life, felt insulting. However, I think that's more because princesses are looked at as something children fantasize about rather than the belief that women need easy games. That could be why Princess Peach: Showtime seemed to be geared to a younger audience.

Nintendo at least has Samus, which they have a habit of sidelining. Part of their problem with female leads could be that the company is run by old men and their creative directors are mostly old men.

AH, Super Princess Peach. Haven't played, but yeah, the pink princess stuff has larger crowd with young ones. I still think they could have given Peach a better treatment than a mini game collection, but then again a lot of people say it's pretty good... Just not for me.
But Zelda is different. There could have been so much more on offer here but guess not.

Samus doesn't get as much spot light simply because the Metroid games don't sell anywhere near as good as the Zelda and Mario games. Dread was the best selling Metroid game of all time and it sold.. 3.07 million copies.

Actually I think this might all just be about business, not as much as old men at the top. I think both Eiji and Miyamoto are very flexible when it comes to Zelda still, Furakawa on the other hand is a pure businessman. The last two Zelda games are the best selling so far in the series, but they were also expensive to develop, so they might just play it safe, rather than taking the risk and letting a dev go wild with a bigger budget.
Nintendo are willing to hire fresh blood and let them be creative. We got Splatoon from that for example.

I don't know why they got such treatment since this is all speculation, but I know they deserve better.

I feel like a Zelda-focused Zelda game would have been the perfect opportunity to branch out into a completely different genre. A Sheik stealth game or some kinda kingdom management sim that plays off Zelda's position as a royal would have been fun (or at least more interesting than another action-adventure game).
