You know what's fucked. I totally understand that once she Existed, people started liking the Persona 3 FemC for her personality, and she's funny and all, her version of the game adds a seriously irresponsible amount of content to the writing and story, but like

honestly once someone inevitably makes a mod for the remake that just puts tits and a dress on Makoto and ctrl+F replaces her pronouns in the text, not only will it be fine and most people will ultimately not mind, it will be what I personally think Atlus should've done all along, instead of boxing themselves in by doing infinity times the workload by basically making a second game out of Persona 3 just to justify your character having a vagina, resulting in a world where they get to say 'no you see we can't let you play as a girl, it'd be too much wooooork' from now on

This post has content warnings for: look I'm talking about Persona 3 which is a game where you shoot yourself in the head for superpowers there's light depression talk in here, and that's gonna come hand in hand with what that imagery suggests.

I haven't really played the Personas (but I have played a couple SMTs), but I think this would be a valid opinion to have about any series. There's not really any reason the gender of your main character needs to make them into someone completely different. But like, so often female characters are written as "woman" first, "character" second, while male main characters tend to be written generic characters first so that anyone playing the game (who is assumed to be a cishet boy) has room to self insert.

Also if FemC is so much better than the original boy, maybe her personality should be implanted into him, and the player just chooses a gender at the start of the game. I mean they already did all that writing work, right?

Literally, for reference, they changed an entire major plot point and dozens of minor main-story scenes surrounding it, regarding Junpei, one of the major party members... specifically because he respects you less if you're playing as a girl, because they made him Even More Sexist, so they added a bonus character arc to the one he already had, about learning to respect women. Like the sheer volume of writing that exists solely for the context of 'you're a girl so people are treating you differently' is at once impressive and also completely baffling in how kind of misguided it is.

Also they committed so hard to the bit of making all the boys romance-able that they accidentally let you date the middle schooler oopssssss

I recall that P3P suggests new players of Persona should start with the Male protagonist route, so in my mind Kotone to me is more New Game Plus protagonist ala Yu in Persona 4 Golden's anime, rather then the intended protagonist for Persona 3's main plot. When you consider her peppier personality, new routes with SEES, being able to save Shinjiro and romance Ryoji, finding out how much more fucked Kenji's story is via Rio, etc...honestly it makes sense for her to be the protagonist you play when you've already beaten the game.
So if it were me, I'd make Kotone that: a new mode you unlock for New Game Plus, rather than a simple Choose Your Gender. Don't ask for what that means for Makoto that his New Game Plus version is a girl.
