Hey, just because it's getting to be that time of year again, where ('mysteriously') the numbers for both adoption and abandonment goes up: Please, be a responsible pet owner before you make what's supposed to be a commitment. I understand, Toon Links are a trendy pet right now, and you don't want to feel left out, but they're a living, breathing creature, and they don't stay kits forever. In almost all the pictures and videos and tiktoks you see of people posing cutely with their Toon Links, they're obviously very young individuals, which can paint the wrong sort of picture of what owning one long-term is actually like. Too often I hear horrible stories about people just up and giving up on their Toon Link when it starts maturing, and my heart breaks every time.

For the uninformed, the reason the pet you buy (usually) looks like this:

... Is because it's still in its juvenile state. And I mean, I understand. Look at this funny little fella, he's great. The big ol' eyes and the stubby little limbs, I will never deny someone for thinking they're cute and wanting one for themselves to have around the house. They're even smart enough that they're relatively easy to care for-- that's not the problem. The problem is when people stop caring for them, just because they stop being quite so marketable, and I think that sort of behavior is truly unconscionable.

So to do my part trying to keep that from happening, I want to review:

A still of Link from a cutscene taken from Link: The Faces of Evil

This, right here? This is what your pet is going to look like when it's older. And yes, it's going to be a bit more of a hassle-- it's going to get more hungry more often, they're going to get rowdier and more curious and probably end up getting lost from time to time, and they get a bit needier about attention and affection, sometimes even stabbing you with their swords just to get you to talk to them. No, this is not their fault. This is how they got by in the Wild pre-domestication. This is what they are, and it's cruel and unusual to expect them to bend their whole existence around internet clout-chasing. These things are perfectly natural, your Toon Link isn't 'going bad', it isn't 'getting worse' to spite you, and it isn't a failure of your pet ownership either-- the worst thing YOU can do is give up on an innocent animal.

So if you or someone you know ends up in this position, please remember that a matured Toon Link is still the same one you raised. It's still an expressive, mischievous little ragamuffin. It's still got its bright, unshaded colors and playful attitude. Just because you might not like it anymore doesn't mean it's not true. Please, do your research, and stay kind, y'all.
