lemme tell you growing up in a town that really wanted to pretend it was 1957 until like a decade ago does not help with these universal generational touchstones. Like yeah I'm getting old but also I distinctly remember hearing about Pokemon and Dragonball online around the same time I was watching a lot of I Dream of Jeannie on broadcast, 9/11 as that time all the adults were convinced The Russians were finally Red Dawning us. So now that there's a large cohort of people who treat everything before the Xbox 360 and after the Peloponnesian War as happening roughly simultaneously in ancient history I'm like no shit glad we're all on the same page finally
One of these days someone is going to call the white stripes classic rock and they'll technically be right, but my soul will still leave my body and it'll crumble to dust. Even 5 years can make a drastic change in how we perceive both time and history and it's kinda bullshit
oh god there's an incredibly syrupy nostalgia tour getting advertised out here now featuring Thievery Corporation and Clutch, set in a painstaking recreation of a shitty 90s DC club a la all those Woodstock reenactments, and put me on an ice floe and push me out to sea I simply refuse to be that kind of old
Pageant simulacra. I don't like the "you had to be there" mentality but god trying to recreate things like that is a black hole of nostalgia.
