Say what you want about cassettepunk but I want something that both looks like and that I COULD throw out a 3 story window and pick up and use again. I don't care about what it looks like, I just want it to work and to last.

The feeling of buying an old mobile workstation from a couple in Wisconsin who are selling it on ebay for like a quarter of what it's worth is like this. You get it and it weighs 10 pounds and you hear it make ominous beeping noises when you turn it on and the battery lasts for half an hour, but it's fast, reliable, and has an owner's manual that tells you how to replace the main board in ten minutes if you want to.

The only things stopping laypeople from having one modern computer to use as a terminal to the internet and a few intranet-only 80s/90s/00s machines to do real work with older productivity software are

  1. access to institutional knowledge that is known to retro tech enthusiasts and
  2. good bottom-up guides to how computers work that assume nothing of the reader

... Actually, you know what, I'm gonna make this its own top-level post!
