I do think that Twitter was a very good platform for creating memetic formulations of ideas - "more women prison guards", "what if we monetized the rot", "nobody told me that when you make a game you need to make the whole thing", etc. I think in some ways it's the closest we've come towards a kind of Darmok reality? There's a few of those from other platforms but something about the pithiness of twitter made it good at spitting those out.

But anyway I think it will be weird for people looking back to see the ways this single platform embedded itself in our discourse, even beyond the "newsworthy".

  • Real boss baby vibes
  • gently touching your friends hand bc you've spotted someone acting like an asshole & you want to talk about it later
  • Osama shouldve hooped instead of tryna kill ppl cause he tall as hell

this is probably a bad example since it's not a singular transplantable expression, but Austin Walker's "You ever see a take so bad you immediately go to sleep?" really helped me notice how my brain was reacting to Online's many dreadful inputs

  • “I’m going to get a good grade in therapy, something that is both normal to want and possible to achieve”
  • limiting myself to one dril tweet here: “you do not, under any circumstances, ‘gotta hand it to them’”
  • me sowing / me reaping

There's too many dril tweets to choose from, but face god and walk backwards into hell comes to mind the most. Also "face-eating leopard party"

I know there's a bunch of other tweets or tumbler posts buried in my speech patterns but the problem is they are so far removed from their sources I can't remember what they are any more.

  • "oh, you know which [conservative beliefs i was censored for]."
  • whispering to my date: that's chappie
  • candles, help my family is dying etc (dril's contributions can fill a book)
  • let's see trump (or any sufficiently powerful person) wriggle out of this one

i think what twitter gave us was an ideal platform for the text equivalent of what we'd been doing for many years with images, eg "draw the rest of the fucking owl" to pick a random example. the character limit and general lack of context (other than "what was happening on twitter at the moment") narrowed the scope of what people could / wanted to post just enough to unlock a lot of creativity but keeping things wide open - important preconditions for a novelty factory to produce at above average.
