i just heard the phrase "medication doesn't fix ADHD in the same way contacts don't fix your eyesight but still give you a significant increase in your quality of living" and i think im going to go schedule an appointment with a psychiatrist
Most1 psych meds work this way. But people like to think that brain stuff works differently than the rest of your body, but if you think of your brain as another part of your body, it's much easier to see how psych meds are helpful.
If you break your arm, how would your day to day go if you don't get a cast? Or even take a tylenol? And you still push yourself to do chores and go to work like normal. Not only is your arm really gonna fucking hurt, it's not going to have the opportunity to get better. But people never say "oh you don't need a cast! Try doing yoga!" They know that this is a thing you need outside help with, and that you need to change your behaviors/habits to accommodate it.
Psych conditions can make your life shitty, and your life being shitty can exacerbate your psych conditions. If you're too ADHD to get things done, then the list of things needing to be done will pile up. You might end up facing steep financial or medical repercussions from not getting stuff done, and those both make it even harder to do things, ADHD-having or not.
Psych meds don't make you "normal2" or "fix" you, but they sure as hell make things easier to deal with. Which means you can now begin tackling the big pile of things that is making your day to day shitty so it can be less shitty. Like paying your bills on time, or keeping a job, or dealing with the paperwork hell of social safety nets.
As to how to actually GET psych meds, you (probably) need to see a psychiatrist. Which is a Dr. but for brain stuff. A regular (primary) doctor might be able to give you a low-grade SSRI for depression or anxiety, but not "the good stuff" or for other conditions...cause they don't know what they're doing, they're not trained in that. A therapist can't give you meds because they are not a Dr. Your primary Dr. can give a referral (esp. if your insurance requires this) for a psych place.
It is definitely a pain in the ass to find a psych and a med (or combo, if you got multiple Things going on) that works best for you and your situation, but it's absolutely worth it. It's so nice being able to DO THINGS and NOT BE ANXIOUS ALL THE TIME.

i am not a doctor so I cannot confidently say "all"

there's no such thing as a "normal" person, so says my psych
