I have a few hot takes here and there, but the one that'll get me death threats on any website other than this place is that learning (generally western hemisphere) Spanish should be mandatory in the US the same way learning (canadian) French is mandatory in Canada.

i agree altho im personally biased towards european spanish cuz well. i'm used enough to it from my family that i can almost sorta understand it while latam (esp. mexican and argentinan) dialects throw me entirely for a loop
Most of the reason I specify Western Hemisphere for this is because I've almost never run into anybody here who speaks European Spanish but Mexican Spanish is something I would use almost daily if I knew it

spanish is an interesting case of the various dialects being nearly completely identical lexically and in written form but the phonetics divergence is huge
Yeah it's pretty wild, and I remember talking into an anarchist comrade about this and how it affected his organizing work, and then also talking to a friend from Chile about it too
we don't learn canadian french. Though it is in most curricula throughout the provinces, but I only had to take it through elementary school.
That's fair. My dad said it was mandatory when he grew up, but he left canada in his twenties, and that was checks watch 50 years ago, so it's definitely changed
I mean, even what I was told by my canadian cousins when we were all kids could be different depending on your age

My oldest sister took Spanish, my other sister took French, so I took Italian. And tbh while I probably would have hated the Spanish teacher I really should have taken Spanish.
