guy who refuses to store things in his closet and instead simply ships them to Alaska every month with a bad address so they get returned to his house in a few weeks. "it's free storage" "the government protects mail trucks" "it's a felony if anyone else opens it so it's completely secure"

when i was still teaching i'd give this assignment about inventing a speculative internet or fantasy network, and one of my students (https://joshuakery.com/ !) made an absolutely bonkers 50 page softbank style slide deck about an internet where media mail was MUCH cheaper than online storage. he got up in front of the room and pitched an enterprise solution for keeping your files backed up in a circular network of PO boxes. thing of beauty

…this is how I would store items in World of Warcraft. Just mail them to an alt and then you have like 30 days it sits in your alt’s mail then 30 days it sits in you main’s mail on auto-return.

One year of Google Drive at the 2TB level is ~ $100.

A PO box is less than $60/year. Two 1TB USB drives are $40 if you want to go with the cheapest available.

In actuality, you'd want several of those drives and I don't know how many years/drive you'd realistically have to spread the cost over.

So it doesn't quite work out in this world, yet. However, it might not take much wiggling to get the prices to work out.
