trees seed clouds! they want some rain or shade, they release a bunch of stinky compounds, it wafts up and brings some water together! today's article is about a new class of compounds they're testing the cloud seeding ability of, and apparently it wafts up and reacts with ozone in the atmosphere in order to become a very potent cloud seed.
so like, tell me again, why did we cut down all the trees
spoilers: The Giver after the break
like, obviously a lot of freaky shit was happening in The Giver, but the aspect that hit me probably out-of-proportion was that they de-terraformed their environment. literally removed all the aspects of it that reflected a living, breathing Earth. nobody knew what snow was because it had never happened there. or rain, even, I think? and like, it sounds ridiculous, humans would never do that, right? but like...you killed all the trees. you create microclimates out of asphalt. you have deterraformed your environment, not deliberately, not thoroughly, even worse, you did it haphazardly, never asking what the full consequences of your actions might be. you just didn't want trees taking up space but you changed the very flow of water in your vicinity when you killed them
