It depends on how we Define people, I do think that animals deserve to be treated with at least the basic respect we show other human beings. There are plenty of animals that have shown at least enough sentience that they experience emotions, especially dogs and cats and birds. I think getting beyond that requires a lot of both ethical and ontological considerations, and probably isn't within the scope of this ask. Short answer is basically yes. If it is Unthinkable of doing to a human, I'm not going to do it to an animal either, and almost all cases.
