I hate SEO. I hate SEO. I hate SEO. I hate SEO. I hate SEO. I hate SEO. I hate SEO. I hate SEO. I hate SEO. I hate SEO. I hate SEO. I hate SEO. I hate companies. I hate marketing algorithms. I hate algorithms generally even though many do not derserve my ire.
I nearly got into a screaming match with a customer today because google has been giving people coupons for an offshoot of our company that operates in Georgia. It has our name in the title but for all incense and porpoises it is a different entity entirely and their coupons do not work in our system at all. Whether or not they have location on does not seem to change this!
And it's self-reinforcing because it's not like the algorithms understand that there's a difference once someone has clicked on it. It just knows a bunch of people from the area are clicking on this, so it's preferring it in the search results and so more people click it without knowing it's the wrong one and so the algorithm sees more clicks, etc., etc.
Like this has been a problem since I was working at AutoZone a few years ago, but I'm too exhausted and frustrated to bother typing out my whole rant on that. Just really done with customers getting mad at me when technology is the problem.
