I really appreciate this post. I'm attending AGDQ physically and have felt a lot of anxiety about possibly exacerbating the spread, especially since masks aren't required outside of the arcade room. I'm taking personal precautions (a fresh 3m 9210+ n95 for each day, iota carrageenan nasal spray, and a HEPA air purifier which I'm running on the train and will run in the hotel). I hope it will be enough to keep me and others safe, but I can't be sure.

I'll keep an eye out for how many masks there are in the crowd. Based on what other folks have posted in the attendee discord, I think it will be a good amount, but almost certainly not enough. They're providing a free n95 each day for each attendee, which is good.

(to avoid outing them i won't name names) A speedrunner I watched yesterday was talking about this, and how when he masked up at the last pre-covid-shutdowns GDQ, some other speedrunners and attendees were mocking him for it. He said he didn't even know much about masking practices at the time, and he merely wanted to try and avoid catching the flu at the event and thought masks would work.

Naturally most of the people who gave him shit over it got sick.

This sucks and especially sucks with how few remote runs gdq accepted this year, especially with how (last I checked) every remote run accepted was from North America. The fully remote gdqs were great imo, both for being COVID safe, but also for how much more they allowed runners from all over the world to participate. It feels at times like GDQ management has a bizarre opposition to remote in spite of it being better for safety and access which is just depressing to see.
