Anonymous Guest asked:

What are your thoughts on kaigai idols, and the whole blowup on the left that happened when tiktok and Hasan went after Sob3rt cuz he thought they were appropriators?

it's sort of incredible how little of this ask i understand. to answer your question, my thoughts on this matter are as follows:

oh god this is about orientalism isn't it. i did a brief search for "kaigai" which apparently is japanese for "overseas" and together with "appropriators" i have to assume this was sent to me because i've been posting about orientalism recently. anyway my answer remains exactly the same

lol no i mean it's the entitlement right? you know whoever this is came to my inbox "oh she's asian i bet she'll do the discourse dance for me." and like, sure i'm not deeply wounded by it or whatever but my patience with being a subject of eternal consumption is nevertheless growing quite thin!

epistemic exploitation time.

Epistemic exploitation occurs when privileged persons compel marginalized persons to educate them about the nature of their oppression. I argue that epistemic exploitation is marked by unrecognized, uncompensated, emotionally taxing, coerced epistemic labor. The coercive and exploitative aspects of the phenomenon are exemplified by the unpaid nature of the educational labor and its associated opportunity costs, the double bind that marginalized persons must navigate when faced with the demand to educate, and the need for additional labor created by the default skepticism of the privileged.

Random white people demanding education from PoC, and especially education that requires reliving painful memories of dealing with discrimination, random white people treating PoC like an extractive resource to mine knowledge from - these folks can go away and learn for themselves.

There are vast resources on the internet, essays of all kinds, and books - so many books they can check out of a library, or purchase. There are documentaries. Video essays. Any number of resources if they are willing to shift their entitled asses and do a little search. Wikipedia is right there, with even more links to articles and write ups!

Like are we being paid to spend our precious time, energy, to relive painful memories to educate these clueless people? We are not! None of us is their personal paid tutor on "how not to be a twat about Orientalism 101".

Like my rates for that are going to be £10,000 an hour 😂, because the ignorance is structural, which means it is effectively endless, many white people just want to do a "gotcha" or a "debate me, bro" rather than sincerely want to learn anything. So it's not up to other people to decide how much free information or thinking (on any number of fucking obscure fannish incidents!) they can extract from us here.

At least, not unless they want to personally pay me £10,000 an hour. And even then I am going to unionise and also make sure I have time off from their endless barrage of clueless shit, because I will need £10,000 an hour just to pay for the therapy I will require from having to deal with an internet's worth of feckless white sealions "just asking questions" or whatever.

Again, if someone is serious about learning something about this, they can 100% find a way to do it w/out bothering individual PoC. Even if all the PoC on the Internet blocked their feckless asses and never spoke to them again (and some of the white people on this platform are clearly speedrunning that process!), they could still spend a lifetime just reading through the vast corpus of literature out there on any of these related issues, if they are really driven to learn about any of this. That's up to them, not us. I can't make other people sincerely want to learn things. They have to be genuine and self-motivated, which is about them, not me.

It actually has nothing to do with me as an individual. If I dropped dead during a £10,000 tutoring session with a clueless white person who really wanted to learn about this, after being sad for about 2 seconds, they could still go read a fucking book and learn something.

Tldr: We all need to take care of our energy here, because there is no end to the clueless rubbish white people will produce about these issues. And I still haven't received a single payment of £10,000 for my precious time yet. 😂

I do enjoy telling a story. One of my favored activities. I like to make games where I get to tell a lil tale.

Like I don't think it was Inevitable that a weird girl who was into the epistemology of occult lore and the origins of fairy tales as a teenager would get obsessed with the potential of visual novels as a storytelling medium.

High chance but not inevitable.
