The colors of that scan seemed really off (Especially the red/Magenta bleeding into each other like that).

Turns out this seems to be the only scan of this magazine floating around. Luckily I found an ebay listing that gives us a much better idea of the actual color.

Research tip: Ebay listing are sometimes the only way to find the existence of an object in its natural state. When it comes to old physical media, never assume things are preserved correctly. Always find a second source. And always save ebay listings you stumble across.

My understanding is that the color correction is a purposeful choice by Out-of-Print Archive to restore the magazines as they would have looked when they were new.

The restoration work probably isn’t entirely accurate, but game magazines in the UK were printed on cheap stock, so they’ve definitely faded 35 years after being printed.

This does raise some great questions about digital preservation of physical materials though! I would always prefer to have the raw scans available as source material rather than just someone’s interpretation of a “restored” version.

There are two categories of fan "restorations:"

  • small, subtle adjustments that will mostly go unnoticed unless you know what you're looking for.

  • Cranking the contrast and sharpness so high red and magenta bleed into the same color and calling it the "definitive edition"
