My partner and I just recently picked up a used film camera for a song (the guy threw in a bunch of lenses and tripods with it too) and shot our first reel! We're both genuinely so shocked that any of these pictures came out, because we learned way after the fact that we were not exposing properly AT ALL. Anyway, here's a few highlights.

So one thing about negative film is that it’s super forgiving for exposure. You can under- or over-expose in ways that would make a digital photo useless, and the lab can save the photo during developing/printing. I’m pretty sure this is the main reason why cheap 35mm cameras worked to capture family photos successfully for decades. A lot of these cameras had fixed apertures and shutter speeds, and the photos just…turned out, more or less.

yeah, we are used to how finicky digital sensors are, but the reality is that film was always better in a wider range of scenarios, it just is not as portable or convenient and has ongoing costs

Oh cool! I didn't know that. Neither my partner or I have ever done photography outside of taking pictures of our cats with our phones. We knew bigger aperture=more light and longer shutter speed=more light and just kinda guessed. So it's nice to know that we can flub while we're learning and still get some decent photos out of it :)
