Since it’s tax season I am once again reminded how completely garbage it is that I get a large discount on my taxes because I have a mortgage, while renters get nothing. I shouldn’t be rewarded for having had enough free cash for a downpayment! Paying people for having money is stupid! Either abolish the mortgage interest deduction or add a better deduction for renters.
On further thought definitely abolish. All the MID incentivizes is people taking out bigger mortgages, i.e. driving housing prices higher. The whole thing is just a big indirect subsidy to existing homeowners when they sell.
