Pelosi's chosen conservative Democrat candidate for Senate (a white dude btw) would have struggled against the two more progressive candidates (two women, one of them Black) so Pelosi funded millions of dollars in ads for a Republican who has no policy positions, and never once paid for his own ads. Because California has a party-independent primary system, where the top-two vote getters proceed to the general, this puts her candidate against the Republican and gives voters a party-line choice in direct opposition to what the system is supposed to allow. So now her guy doesn't have to defend his record of oil funding, big pharma connections, his tough-on-crime stances and all the rest - he just has to point to the blue D. It's so fucking gross and corrupt it's hard to believe.
That most of American politics is rich, powerful people working behind the scenes to present a binary choice where they can say "Look, you gotta choose one or the other, and the other is SO BAD you can't possibly. So 'choose' freely now."
Sometimes it's more explicit, like Clinton pumping up Trump, or Schiff and Pelosi funding the Republican in California, but it's pretty much the main calculation. Like the American Dream, American Democracy exists mostly as a myth or ideal to aim for than anything that ever existed. And similarly, you should be angry that it's being kept from you by these games.
