BITTER END

When shadows fall, the creeps crawl... upon you.
Will you fight to the bitter end?

My entry for compost #5!

Composition time: 59 minutes, with some time to sample-hunt beforehand

I've been doing OHCs for a few weeks on my own and I've fallen in love with the concept. I was looking forward to the next compost to finally get a shot at participating! I've been in a creative block the past months, and going with the mindset of "whatever is completed in an hour, that's that", has been really freeing. It lets me try out a lot of different techniques and ideas, too, which has been super fun.

For this compo, my mind stuck to the word zombie. They may be plushes, but they're still fierce! No choice but to take out the heavy weaponry. I went with something quite dark and atmospheric.

I'm a beginner at producing in general and I appreciate comments and feedback if you have any. ✌️Looking forward to seeing what other folks will make today!

in reply to @Cerise's post:

Every synth used in this compo is Vital (so the pad, lead melody, and the 'laser' heard among the gunshot sfx)! I'm mainly using tweaked presets since I've not delved into sound design much haha. Thank you for the comment!!

wtf the sound design in this is so cool!!! rly impressive and fits the prompt rly well imo :3

side note: are u aware of battle of the bits? there are a lot of ohcs hosted there if ur looking for more to take part in :3

Thank you! While I've gone with presets, it was fun trying to make a good sound selection (which is something I think I'm becoming better at, especially doing OHCs), but I can't take credit on the design itself haha.

I've heard of Battle of the Bits, though I've never really done chiptune music before (bar one OHC messing with Magical 8bit Plug lol)! If this genre of music strikes the mood and I find an easier way to get those sounds, I'll definitely consider it!!

i haven't done much chiptune either, but there are often allgear battles (where you can just make anything as long as it fits the prompt), along with wildchip/fakebit battles (just has to have some chiptune elements/sounds) and remix battles (anything as long as it uses the sounds provided), so i do some of them as it's just a nice community to be involved in :3

if u did want to make chiptune then i'm sure people there would be happy to help you along the way though lol

Oh, I had no idea there were so many different variants that were hosted! I'll have to give it more of a look eventually 👀 Thanks for the info!

It's been a fun experience interacting with folks on cohost for this, rather than working on the OHC on my own and not posting it (though I do plan to post a compilation of my OHCs at the end of the year). Being part of a small community's pretty motivating!

Nice to find another compost entry where the lead sounds somewhat like the high buzz of a zombie eggbug.
I'm imagining eggbugs flying and doing that high-pitched lead buzz, but when they open their mouths they have a deep guttural voice like at 0:28

the combination of melody and texture on the lead is lovely, has such a strong simultaneous creepiness and cute bug feeling.

in terms of production feedback i think your textures and balancing are good (especially given the time constraint), though imo the drums could benefit from more range in panning, e.g., moving the hat to one side and one of the snares opposite it would give it a lot more room.

I'm happy that feeling came through the sound selection!!

Thanks for the feedback :) I must say mixing is not my strong suit and it's part of what I usually leave until the end of my OHCs, so I'm noting this for future pieces! Giving things a little more space through panning is a simple trick that I forget about... oops :eggbug-classic:

the voiceover adds a lot of atmosphere to this! way cool. the periodic stutters on the drums speak to me. glad you're having fun with the one-hour format, it's a great way to practice and to for sure get Something done, whether you end up loving the result or not. a valuable exercise

I love messing around with percussions, so it was cool to make funky rhythms with them for this compo! :)
As you say, it's valuable to get practice in this way, though it's not always satisfactory by the end... but for this one, I'm quite happy with the result.
I'm glad you enjoyed it, thanks for the comment! :eggbug:
