And, uh…
Given I went to a Jewish day school, I'm frankly kind of stunned by how little Jewish history we were actually taught. I have reams of notes about pre-Disasporic Judea — stuff like Alexander Yannai and the Roman occupation — including pieces of the Tanach being taught as straight history, then barely anything for the next two thousand years, save for brief asides on the codification of the Mishnah and Talmud, the Crusades, the Inquisitions, Maimonides, and for some reason Shabbatai Zvi… and then it jumps right to Herzl and the Basel Conference, and from then on it's all Israeli history.
And all of that was only in the eighth grade. I have no notes of any continuing Jewish history education in any other year.
I'm kind of pissed off about this?
