i was so relieved when the indie game Tunic scratched this itch recently. Wind Waker Link had a lot of character in a similar-ish way, but it definitely hits different
having played Tunic before The Legend of Zelda, I'm getting a whole lot of "oh that's what they were riffing on" moments
i was so blown away by how masterfully they threaded the needle of making a sincere modern take on Zelda 1's secret-oriented design, without the usual irony/cynicism about its obtuse nature, but more importantly without it being frustrating either--somehow!
