Why we can't have nice things

I was playing a survival game last night that was good fun but had a few issues that gave me pause.

One issue that stood out was that at one point, on a rocky island that I was living on, I ran out of rocks. I literally couldn't find any more rocks, either on the rocky terrain of the island or in the surrounding water. This was an issue because rocks are an essential ingredient to make most things, and, well, they're rocks! They should be everywhere!

I should note that there was a large rocky outcropping that I believe was a resource for getting more rocks, but it required me to make a pick to access them, and guess what you needed to make a pick?
