Maybe this is just me but I can't stand websites/software that arrange things into columns instead of rows or a grid. It feels like I shouldn't be looking at it. Like I'm at the magazine-sludge-hell section of the grocery store checkout. A wretched sea of rectangles placed at random. Visual noise that I am physically incapable of looking at directly because my brain's built-in ad-blocker is desperately yanking my eyeballs away from it. Completely unviewable layout. Your website is simultaneously invisible to me and also setting off the same alarm in my brain that goes off when I see a piece of lint on the floor that looks just a little too much like a spider. Your website is the bright colors on a poisonous frog's back that warn other animals not to eat it. I am leaving immediately

I didn't even know pinterest uses this layout because every time I have the misfortune of winding up there, that website does everything in its power to make me go away (because I don't have an account). All-time best web site at clogging up image search results and then never ever letting you see that image in full-res. Or maybe even at all. Sometimes I try to click a link and it just goes "here's 500 images that aren't the one you clicked on"

that's interesting, I've never really had a problem with sidebars unless they're used for something stupid (I had to use an extension to remove basically everything from twitter's right sidebar lol)

After reflecting on this more since I first posted it, my current hypothesis is I just don't like it when anything too closely resembles either an advertisement or, especially, a newspaper layout -- something about newspaper formatting has always really frustrated me
