My fiancée works night shift and pretty often we hop on a Discord call and I stream her some games so she can stay entertained. She had this game in her Steam library (we share) so the past couple nights I've been playing through it!
I went in with low expectations. It's a tie-in game, after all. For what it is? I had fun! You switch between element fighting styles in real time with the bumpers, and level them up individually based on how many dudes you beat with a particular element (I went hard on water and air). Additional levels unlock new combos and new moves. And the original voice cast is all here, even down to Shiro Shinobi the radio announcer!
(whispers) don't worry about the non-existent story. It's fine.
There's even a pro bending match game which you play in the first level--but after you beat story mode you can play in the pro bending league as a game by itself! It got tough, I couldn't quite win the last match on the second difficulty level of three.
This is a game that wants you to replay it. You can hit 'continue' after beating the game to do it again with all your current upgrades. Some levels have hidden stuff you can only access with bending that you didn't have the first time around. And there are secret codes to unlock different costumes.
I beat the game on normal difficulty over about six hours - nice and swift. My one major warning is the boss fights can be a slog. Even having pretty much mastered the countering mechanic they want you to use, they take a WHILE to wear down--and this game has a habit of throwing them at you. If you get stuck on the first one, I have bad news about the rest of the game.
Overall? I had a few hours of silly fun beating dudes up as Korra. The combat animations made me feel cool and powerful. It was super cute when the whole voice cast thanked me for playing the game at the end. More games should be only six hours long. End of review.
