Thinking more about the FFXIV TTRPG announcement, and the playful (?) pushback on the idea that it might be a D&D 5e clone.

Also thinking about the days where a minority of folks loudly complained that D&D 4e was bad because it was too much like an MMORPG.

Also, also thinking about how D&D 4e would model the core gameplay experience of FFXIV better than 5e.

Also, like... folks know that Final Fantasy is D&D, right? They had a Beholder in the first game.

It was more or less Basic/Expert D&D. It probably included some Wizardry elements - that game's real popular in Japan! - but the FF1 classes map well to B/X classes and FF1 included a lot of monsters that mapped to D&D's monster entries, including the aforementioned Beholder in the Famicom release:

But legit, that's like quibbling over whether different types of apples are still apples, right? Both B/X and Wizardry effectively are D&D.
