I spend a fair amount of time looking at game screenshots from bygone eras (see: my obsession with improving my pixel art) and this one just GOT ME today, lmao. It's from Boggle on GameBoy and it is a priceless gem. Why does Pearl have... a pie? A steaming pile of spaghetti?

People always focus on pixel art for like SNK arcade games, but there's a whole fascinating world of pixel art created for perfectly mundane purposes, because it was the only thing that could be displayed on computers. Like, nowadays these would just be stock photos, heck in the late 90s they'd be stock photos, but instead we get these delightful little pixel portraits!
Pixel art aiming for realism under extreme constraints is a really under-explored style in modern games.
