the Might and Magic 1 setup for Optimal Experience is so fucking hilarious:

  • purchase and download it from GoG (along with MM2-5 as a bonus!) to have it with a preconfigured dosbox setup here
  • download Where Are We? which is a single .exe that sits in a zip folder on an Apache server that was last updated in 2015 to have a full feature automap with note taking, proper item descriptions, handy spell reference and a robust character creator that lets you roll by the thousands and pick and choose what you want to keep (or adjust it with weighted point values). this also works with Might and Magic 2-5, Wizardry 1-5, and Bard's Tale 1-3. feel free to download the included surface maps which allows you to use the physical maps that came with the games as the background for when you are traveling on the overworld here
  • download the Might and Magic 1 graphic overhaul mod because the DOS version of MM1 is truly a impressively hideous looking game, this zip is buried on the dungeoncrawlers.org fansite, you just dump it out in the main game directory and let it overwrite what it needs to here
  • find the single post in a GoG thread that contains a jpg attachment, this jpg is renamed to .exe and you run it once in the game directory to patch the message speed to not blink past in a single frame so that you can enjoy responsive cycle speed and still understand what's happening. here
  • boot up Might and Magic, boot up Where Are We?, fiddle with windows and delight at the wealth of information and clarity, die to the first pack of Battle Rats.

wow that multiroll thing sounds amazing.

just looked up some M&M1 footage, it's more graphically primitive than i expected. guess the first one i tried was 2 or 3. wonder how the NES port was.

might and magic 1 and 2 fell under the curse of being ported from more graphically capable systems at the time (apple II), but the first one for sure was a real slapdash job for DOS on the eye searing front. from what i understand the NES port was actually Really Good, some fun battle tunes at least.
