as a general PSA: if someone only provides a Mastodon or Bluesky account to follow and you don’t want to make an account on either service, don’t despair! you can still follow their updates via RSS.

Mastodon (at least by default) lets you put “.rss” on the end of a profile URL to get the RSS feed, e.g. https://mastodon.social/@GFD.rss. Bluesky seems to use some kind of internal ID in the RSS URL, but it should be discoverable from the profile page; i use the Feed Preview Firefox extension to find them.

tumblr also has RSS, and even provides RSS feeds for individual tags! [USERNAME].tumblr.com/rss for the full blog and [USERNAME].tumblr.com/tagged/[TAG]/rss if you'd like to follow just their art or webcomic updates or what have you

bluesky/tumblr accounts set to private/18+ don't share their feeds, unfortunately, and pillowfort doesn't appear to have any kind of syndication

i'm going around today hoarding feeds into a free inoreader account; they're also capable of ferreting out the RSS if you give it a bluesky URL, no fuss. it can also export the list i'm building today and import to other feedreader services so i'm not locking myself in to anything. since that's, you know. increasingly important to me 🙃

bluesky's rss is crap yeah. with inoreader on desktop you can open a post and click the button in the top bar that looks like a coffee cup (or press "w") and it forces the image through. if that's possible on their mobile app i haven't found it yet. edit: NVM the way to load full content on mobile is "open the [..what is it? skeet?] and swipe/pull down". like refreshing the page in a web browser.

obviously not ideal. i think if i paid for the pro version it might be able to make that full-formatting view the default but i should test if feedbro or fraidyc.at is better before i start paying money; fraidyc.at is specially trying to be an alternative for social media following while inoreader is more catering to "second email inbox for news"
